Buena Park Community Information

Manuel Nieto was the first to own the land that contained Buena Park in 1834. Nieto’s territory, which extended from the San Gabriel River to the Santa Ana River, was divided into five ranchos. One of the five ranchos was named Rancho Los Coyotes and totaled 48,806 acres. The area that was to become Buena Park was located near the center of this rancho.

Rancho Los Coyotes is also the place where Commodore Robert S. Stockton and his band of Americans rested in preparation for the battle of the San Gabriel River in January of 1847. The battle was won and the outcome of the Mexican War (1846-48) was settled in this area. The exact spot of Stockton's encampment took place in what is now the Los Coyotes Country Club in the Bellehurst section of Buena Park.

It wasn’t until 1953 that Buena Park was incorporated as a city. The area first became known as a dairy center and the location of both the Sante Fe and Southern Pacific railroad stations. The Lily Creamery began operating in 1889 and became part of one of the largest and fastest growing industries in Buena Park. A few wineries called Buena Park home as well.

Known as the "Friendliest Place in the West," Knott’s Berry Farm has been providing fun for the whole family for more than three decades. It all began nearly 70 years ago when the world-famous Mrs. Knott's Chicken Dinner Restaurant opened and became a popular spot to enjoy a southern style home cooked meal. Today, the theme park offers a memorable and truly unique shopping, dining and entertaining experience.

The North Orange County Community College District serves the higher educational needs of the area. The University of California at Irvine, Chapman University and Biola University are just a few of the colleges in the area.

Today, Buena Park has become famous for its popular "Entertainment Zone." Its central location, encompassing Beach Boulevard south of the 91 Freeway, has also made Buena Park an attractive city to work, live and enjoy themselves.
